Time off and leaves of absence

What you need to know

Taking time off — away from your job — is vital to being at your best. We support this by offering ample time off for all kinds of situations.

Personal Time Off (PTO)

PayPal provides vacation time consistent with the statutory requirements of 30 consecutive calendar days per year after 12 months of employment.

  • Your PTO is prorated based on the number of days worked in a year
  • You can take PTO after your one-year anniversary (probation period)
  • You’ll receive a vacation bonus of one-third of a month's salary payable at the start of your PTO

How it works

You must use your PTO by the end of each anniversary year and at least one PTO period must be at least 14 days long. PTO options are:

  • 3 PTO periods where 1 period is 14+ days and 2 periods are 5+ days
  • 2 PTO periods where 1 period is 14+ days
  • 1 PTO period (30 days)

PTO must begin at least 48 hours before a public holiday or your day of rest. You can't carry-over unused PTO, but you can receive payment for PTO that was not taken.

Vacation during your first year of employment

PTO must be earned so it cannot be taken during your first year of employment (probation period).

Employees needing to take PTO in advance of earning their time off should work with their manager to see if they may take an unpaid personal leave.

PTO requests are approved based on PayPal business needs. It’s important to give your manager as much advance notice as possible so they can make any adjustments required to cover your duties while you’re away. When requesting PTO:

  • Give your manager a minimum of 30 days advance notice
  • Make your request in Workday
  • Take a minimum of 5 consecutive days at a time
  • Be mindful that your PTO cannot start on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday or two days before holidays

Before you submit a PTO request, check your balance to ensure you have enough to meet your needs. All full-time employees can view their balances in Workday.

PTO payment options

There are three ways to receive PTO pay.

  • PTO pay: While on vacation, you’re entitled to a PTO payment equal to one third of your monthly salary as a vacation bonus. This is in addition to your regular salary. You’ll automatically receive this payment when you request your vacation in Workday.
  • Half of 13th Month Salary Time Off (Paid): You have the option to receive half of your 13th salary as part of your vacation pay. You can request this option in Workday when you request PTO.
  • PTO Vacation Sell Time Off (Paid): You can sell up to 10 days of vacation. You can request this option in Workday when you request PTO.

Request PTO

Before you submit a PTO request, check your balance to ensure you have enough to meet your needs. Non-shift employees should review their balances in Workday.

You’ll also need to talk with your manager about your plans and give as much notice as possible (at least 30 days) so that your job duties can be covered while you’re out. We encourage you to do that before booking airplane tickets or booking travel plans.

Submit your PTO request using the appropriate system. Your manager will receive your PTO request and will approve or reject your request. Your manager will consider business needs, relevant circumstances, and how many hours of PTO you have accrued.

Notify your manager as soon as possible if your plans change. Your manager will need to adjust any work coverage plans made for your PTO. Then correct your PTO request in Workday or Genesys. Your manager will be notified of this correction.
