Time off and leaves of absence

What you need to know

Taking time off — away from your job — is vital to being at your best. We support this by offering ample time off for all kinds of situations.

Paid time off

PayPal values your wellness and wants you to take care of yourself and others in a way that best addresses your needs. Our Paid Time Off (PTO) policy provides the flexibility to use your time for whatever recharges you.

You’re entitled to 22 working days of PTO each year, which you start to accrue from your date of hire. You can use any PTO accrued, even during your probation period.

If you have not used up all of your PTO in a given year, you may carry forward up to 5 days maximum per year. You must use all carried-forward PTO days by 31 March of the following year, or they will be forfeited.

If you have no PTO left and wish to take time off, you can take unpaid leave.

To request PTO:

  • Check your PTO balance in Workday to make sure you have enough PTO accrued to cover your absence. Keep in mind any carryover days you may have and when they will expire.
  • Talk to your manager to ensure any necessary arrangements are made to cover your duties while you’re out of the office
  • Submit your PTO request using Workday

Paid leaves of absence

Take care of what’s most important to you: your family. PayPal offers a variety of paid leaves of absence that allow you to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Please check the relevant Leaves of Absence policy to ensure that you allow enough time for your notice. You can find additional information and guidelines for applying for leave through Workday on the Bridge (only accessible within the PayPal firewall).

Sick leave

PayPal's sick leave policy allows you to take time off work if you are unwell. Our benefits are built to support your short-term and long-term absences due to illness. All employees in Spain are entitled to the sick scheme for what is stated as “temporary incapacity,” as long as the employee in particular applying for it has accrued the minimum social payment period with the Spanish social security authorities, which is as follows:

  • Common illness: 180 days within the 5-year rolling period prior to when the baja (temporary cancellation of the employee's subscription in the social security due to the sick episode) is reported
  • Accidents (either work-related or not) and professional disease: no minimum requirement of minimum social payment period with the Spanish social security authorities

Please refer to the Social Security website for general information about time frames on sick leave in Spain.

Carer’s leave

You are entitled to take unpaid time off to care for family members. You may take up to 104 weeks to look after 1 person. If you need to care for another family member after this time, you are eligible for 1 additional and final leave of up to 104 weeks.

Maternity leave

If you are pregnant and request leave prior to the birth of your child, you can receive up to 16 consecutive weeks of maternity leave, and 2 more weeks for each additional child in case of multiple births. You can decide the distribution of this 16-week period, as long as 6 consecutive weeks are after the actual birth date.

As soon as you inform PayPal that you are pregnant, you’ll receive a free medical assessment through our Mutua (medical centre).

Expectant mothers will receive paid time off for any antenatal medical appointments before the birth in order to attend birth preparation techniques classes, and antenatal tests during working hours. You must give your manager written notice of any appointment and must produce evidence of the appointment upon request.

For time off related to breastfeeding a child under 9 months, you may choose from the following options:

  • 1 working hour divided in 2 fractions of half-an-hour per working day with full pay
  • Half-an-hour reduction in your daily shift per working day
  • Accumulation of the total time-off to which you’re entitled, until the child is 9 months old, and then you would take the leave altogether in full working days

Paternity leave

If you're the father of a newborn child, you’re entitled to 12 weeks of paid paternity leave, with the first 4 weeks being mandatory. In addition, the mother of the child can transfer 2 weeks of her maternity leave to you, by statutory law.

In the event of multiple births, adoption, foster care or multiple custody, your paternity leave will be extended by 2 more weeks for each child beyond the second one. For a newly adopted child or recent custody of a child you foster or plan to adopt, the leave of each parent can last up to 10 weeks, with the first 6 weeks a mandatory leave for each parent. In addition, the maximum amount of leave between both parents is 16 weeks (apart from the 6 mandatory weeks).

Parental leave

PayPal provides parental leave benefits of up to 3 years of unpaid leave.

Parental bonding leave

All full-time and part-time employees may take parental bonding leave if you have:

  • A baby and need to care for your newborn child
  • A child placed with you for adoption or long-term (generally a year or more) foster care

Parental bonding leave gives you a minimum of 6 weeks of time off with 100% base pay.

This benefit is coordinated with all discretionary and/or statutory leave benefits that exist locally, such that the total period of paid leave available is no less than 6 weeks. Where local leave benefits exceed 6 weeks, but statutory pay is less than full pay, the employee is entitled to receive the difference between full pay and statutory pay. Where local leave benefits exceed six weeks at full pay, there will be no additional benefit.

Refer to the Bonding Leave Policy on HR Hub for more details (only accessible within the PayPal firewall).
