Paid time off (PTO)
PayPal values your wellness and wants you to take care of yourself and others in a way that best addresses your needs. Our paid time off (PTO) policy provides the flexibility to use your time for whatever recharges you.
You start earning PTO on your first day of employment:
- First calendar year: 15 days
- After first calendar year: 1 additional day for every 2 years of service, up to a maximum of 25 days

Paid leaves of absence
Marriage leave
Employees receive 5 days of paid leave for their wedding.
Bereavement leave
Employees receive up to 20 days paid bereavement leave for the death of a family member, depending on the relationship.
Sick and medical leave
Employees who become too sick to work are eligible for up to 30 days paid sick leave per year.
Maternity leave
Expectant mothers are eligible for 90 days of maternity leave to support them throughout the latter stages of their pregnancy and their child's early months. Of those 90 days, at least 60 days must be paid leave and at least 45 days must be taken after the birth of your child.
Paternity leave
New fathers are eligible for 10 days of paid paternity leave. Leave must be taken within 90 days after the birth of your child.
Baby’s first birthday leave
You receive ½ day of paid leave on your baby’s first birthday.
Child and sibling wedding leave
You receive 1 day of paid leave for the wedding of your child or a sibling.
Parental leave
You’re eligible for up to 1 year of unpaid parental leave to care for a child age 6 or younger who isn’t in elementary school. To offset unpaid leave, you can claim a subsidy from the Employment Insurance Fund.
Note that you will not be eligible for parental leave if your spouse is also on leave caring for the same child.
Other leaves of absence
You’re eligible for:
- Up to 3 days of leave for fertility treatment (1 paid day, 2 unpaid)
- Paid military reserve duty leave (per local legislation, male employees only)
- 1 day of unpaid menstruation leave per month (female employees only)
- Up to 90 days of unpaid leave per calendar year to care for family members who are sick or elderly
Personal leave
If you have exhausted your paid leave, you may be entitled to take leave without pay.
In extraordinary circumstances, PayPal may provide unpaid personal leave for up to 30 days to eligible employees in good standing who need to take time off from work to fulfill urgent personal obligations not provided for under statute.
