Paid leaves of absence
Short-term disability (STD) leave
At PayPal, we value your wellness and want you to take care of yourself and others in a way that best addresses your needs. PayPal’s short-term disability (STD) plan provides you with financial relief if you find yourself unable to work for an extended period of time due to illness or injury.
Eligibility
You are eligible for STD benefits if:
- You are unable to perform your job due to a disability as defined by PayPal’s STD plan (including illness, injury, medical emergency, or surgery). See the Maternity Leave section for information on maternity disability benefits.
- You are off work due to illness or injury for at least seven full or partial days
- You are unable to earn more than 80% of your pre-disability regular wages
- You are under the regular and continuous care and treatment of a health care provider
- Your claim is filed within 49 days of the date of disability
Waiting period
The first seven days of your leave is considered the unpaid waiting period. To receive pay, you must apply five days of Paid Sick Time. If you do not have Paid Sick Time available, you are able to apply PTO or Tracking-Free Vacation (TFV). Please keep in mind that if you do not have time available to cover the waiting period, it will be unpaid.
Exempt employees: Paid Sick Time is entered into Workday as a Time Off program. Please refer to this user guide (only accessible within the PayPal firewall) for support on how to enter this time.
Nonexempt employees: Paid Sick Time is entered in Kronos.
How it works
STD benefits provide you with financial support if you are unable to work for an extended period of time due to illness or injury.
- Your leave begins on day eight after completing the seven-day waiting period
- STD provides you with 100% of your base salary for up to six weeks; after six weeks, you’ll receive 80% of your base salary for up to six months
Payment of disability benefits
- Benefits may be paid for up to 180 days with supporting medical documentation. The amount of weekly benefits depends on the base salary on the day before the disability begins.
- Any salary increases received while on STD will be applied in the following pay cycle after the new salary effective date.
Coordination with statutory plans and other policies
Between STD and any state-mandated disability benefits, workers’ compensation, and/or Social Security Disability that may be applicable, employees are eligible to receive 100% of their base weekly salary for the first six weeks, and 80% thereafter.
- California employees: In most cases, you will be eligible to receive income from PayPal’s STD plan and the PayPal CA Voluntary Disability Plan (only accessible within the PayPal firewall). STD benefits are provided automatically.
- Statutory state disability plans: In most cases, you will be able to receive income from PayPal’s STD plan. Employees living in states with a statutory state plan may also be eligible for state-sponsored disability benefits.
- FMLA: STD leave will run concurrently with leave under FMLA. Any time taken under STD will be counted toward the 12 weeks of available FMLA leave per a 12-month period.
- Workers’ compensation: If you were injured at work, you may be eligible for workers’ compensation. Please contact PayPal’s Safety & Security team: Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) (only accessible within the PayPal firewall); phone: 408-967-7777; international toll free: 866-406-3229.
How to apply
Planning ahead for your STD leave helps to create a smooth transition for both you and your team. You are able to initiate your leave as early as you want, but you must initiate your leave at least 30 days prior to your expected first date of absence (or, if the leave was not foreseeable, as soon as possible).
To initiate your leave, contact our leave administrator, Sedgwick at 855-233-7599, or go to mySedgwick.com and create a profile. The Service Center Representative (SCR) will initiate your leave. The SCR will initiate the process but will not be able to answer leave-specific questions. Your claim will be assigned to a Disability Specialist, who will review the claims process, set expectations, and answer any questions.
Once you initiate your leave, Sedgwick will send the initial packet within five business days of claim initiation. The disability claim packet you receive from Sedgwick will include leave information and forms required for processing your claim. Sedgwick will also coordinate with Human Resources, Payroll, and your manager.

Long-term disability (LTD) leave
At PayPal, we value your wellness and want you to take care of yourself and others in a way that best addresses your needs. PayPal’s long-term disability (LTD) plan provides you with financial relief if you find yourself unable to work for an extended period of time due to illness or injury.
Eligibility
You are eligible for LTD benefits if:
- You have satisfied the 180-day elimination period under PayPal’s STD plan
- You are unable to perform your job due to a disability as defined by PayPal’s STD plan (including illness, injury, medical emergency, surgery, or complications arising from pregnancy or childbirth)
- You are unable to earn a living due to your disability
- You are under the care of a doctor or medical practitioner
How it works
LTD benefits provide you with financial support if you can’t work due to illness or injury and have exhausted short-term disability (STD) benefits, and continue to qualify as disabled.
LTD benefit amount
When you enrolled in PayPal benefits, either as a new hire or during Annual Enrollment, you had the option of enrolling in either employer-paid long-term disability coverage or purchasing employee-paid buy-up long-term disability coverage:
- Basic LTD (paid by PayPal): 60% of base salary (up to a maximum of $25,000 per month)
- Buy-up LTD (paid by you): 70% of base salary (up to a maximum of $25,000 per month)
To confirm which coverage you elected, review your benefit elections directly on Your Benefits Resources (YBR) (@Work) | (Log In).
How to apply
If you are still disabled after 18 weeks on the short-term disability (STD) plan, Sedgwick will automatically refer your claim to Prudential, PayPal’s LTD leave administrator, to begin their initial evaluation of your LTD claim. This is to ensure a smooth transition to LTD after week 26 of STD.
Coordination with company policy
LTD benefits coordinate with any state-mandated disability benefits, workers’ compensation, and/or Social Security Disability that may be applicable.
Reminders and resources
- Review the Benefits While on Leave document (only accessible within the PayPal firewall) to understand how your benefits are affected during your leave
- For questions about your LTD claim, contact Prudential, PayPal’s LTD Administrator, at 855-233-7599

- Exempt employees are eligible on date of hire
Waiting period
The first seven days of your leave is considered the unpaid waiting period. To receive pay, you must apply five days of Paid Sick Time. If you do not have Paid Sick Time available, you are able to apply PTO or Tracking-Free Vacation (TFV). Please keep in mind that if you do not have time available to cover the waiting period, it will be unpaid.
If your first day of leave coincides with the birth of your baby, your waiting period will be waived.
Exempt employees: Paid Sick Time is entered into Workday as a Time Off program. Please refer to this user guide (only accessible within the PayPal firewall) for support on how to enter this time.
Nonexempt employees: Paid Sick Time is entered in Kronos.
When your leave begins
Your Maternity Leave begins on the date your baby is delivered. If you have a pregnancy-related disability, your doctor will need to provide a certification allowing you to take time prior to your expected delivery date. Time off prior to delivery is based on the employee’s disability and when the doctor indicates the leave should begin.
How it works
Your maternity benefit through PayPal is provided through a combination of maternity short-term disability (MSTD), Bonding Leave, and any other applicable state-specific paid leave programs. You may be eligible for at least 16 weeks of paid time off at 100% pay.
Maternity short-term disability (MSTD) provides you with 100% of base salary for eight weeks post-delivery for time away from work, regardless of delivery type. This benefit is coordinated with any applicable state benefits, to ensure that you get 100% of your base pay for eight weeks after you deliver.
Bonding Leave provides you with 100% of your base salary for up to eight weeks and is combined with any other applicable state-specific paid leave programs. Bonding Leave (this page only accessible within the PayPal firewall) can begin as soon as your MSTD ends and your doctor certifies that you are no longer disabled. Bonding Leave must be taken within the first year of giving birth and can start at any time after MSTD ends. Bonding Leave can be taken at one time or in full-week increments, pending your manager’s approval.
